| Abstract | Completed in the end of 2001, Shanxi Netcom’s IP broadband networks can be divided into the core layer, the distribution layer and the access layer as per network functions. With the rapid growth of the broadband value-added businesses represented by IPTV, video surveillance and the like, particularly the rapid growth of P2P business, the number of broadband users and the network traffic of the broadband metropolitan area networks of Shanxi Netcom all increased rapidly in 2007, with the occupancy rate of the upstream bandwidth of the sinks of some metropolitan area networks above 70%. In 2008, with the progress of the “Optical Fiber Substituting Copper Wire” project and the project to speed up the broadband network, the upstream bandwidth will be improved a lot. Moreover, it is estimated that the broadband users of Shanxi Netcom will increase by more than 400, 000, bringing about higher requirements for the network capacity and equipment capability of IP broadband metropolitan area networks. Therefore, in order to meet the demands of broadband business development in the future, Taiyuan Netcom will implement a project to optimize and reconstruct metropolitan area networks in 2008 and continue to expand the capacity of and improve the existing IP networks to meet the demands of clients at different levels. I have participated in a lot of construction and maintenance work for broadband metropolitan area networks and are familiar with the current situation of the broadband metropolitan area networks of Taiyuan Netcom. The paper has been completed based on my experience in practice and the knowledge I have learnt. It mainly probes into the following aspects: 1. Introduction of the current situation of the broadband metropolitan area networks of Taiyuan Netcom and analysis of the existing problems; 2. Principles proposed based on my own experience for optimization of broadband metropolitan area networks; 3. Detailed solutions proposed based on actual situations for optimization of broadband metropolitan area networks and construction of IP carrying networks. |
