The research works are supported by Key Item of Application Basis Research Plan of Tianjin, China. Grant No. 06YFJZJC00400.With the rapid development of informationization, the demand to communication network is increasing, and it is the trend of optical fiber communication that higher speed, more capacity and lower cost. In the basis of the polarization light knowledge and introduction of polarization division multiplexing (PDM) system, which is the novel choice of Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM), the theory of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and polarization dependent loss (PDL) is detailed researched, and their combination effects and influence to the PDM system also are systematically investigated in this paper. The research works are summed up as followings:1. Description, application and structure analysis of PDM system.2. The theory analysis of polarization light. Description methods of polarization light are introduced, such as Jones matrix, Stokes matrix, Poincare sphere theory and their relationship. Measurement methods of Degree of Polarization (DOP) are expounded.3. The theory and experiments about PMD.The basic theory and origin of PMD are totally introduced.The numerical model of PMD is built, and the effects of the first and second order PMD to optical fiber links are analyzed. PMD-induced crosstalk of orthogonal channels is simulated.The experiment system of PMD is put up and results are analyzed. (crosstalk1:1, 140ps)4. The theory and experiments about PDL.The origin of PDL is systematically introduced and numerical model is simulated.The PDL experiment [0, 10dB] system building and related work are summed up.5. PMD and PDL experiment systems are integrated, and its combination effects cascade model is experimentally verified.
