| Abstract | In the 21 century, with the development of computer technology, it has found an increasingly wide application in all fields. In the filed of digital image processing, computer is made use of getting and dealing with visual image more and more widely.Target objects are divided from backgrounds by image segmentation which can find out the boundary line of objects and backgrounds in image. Up to the present, in the filed of image segmentation, different kinds of segmentation algorithms are proposed which are generalized for three aspects: the threshold of division-based, the regional division-based and the edge detection of partition-based.Firstly, studying the historical development of some classic segmentation algorithms and technologies both domestic and foreign , the paper compares with all kinds of segmentation algorithms and technologies and finds out these segmentation algorithms and technologies suitable for applications. On the basis of analyzing these segmentation algorithms and technologies, a kind of multi-level adaptive image segmentation is proposed.Secondly, the paper carries out the multi-level adaptive image segmentation after researching and discussing in depth.Thirdly, the results of testing this segmentation are compared with other segmentations in order to analyze their advantages and disadvantages.Finally, to summarize subject, the paper proposes the further development of image segmentation and prospects the out look of image segmentation.
