| Title | A Video Conference System for the Collaboration in Construction Projects |
| Abstract | A construction project typically involves many participants such as the owner, the design firms, the contractors and the sub-contractors. There is usually a significant distance from one participant to another. Even within a single participant, the engineers from different departments may works in different buildings or even in different cities. It is important for the related engineers who work in different places to collaborate efficiently.In recent years, some web-based collaborative platform systems have been developed by software vendors. With these systems, engineers from the multi-party can handle relevant information through computer networks so as to improve the efficiency of collaboration. Howerer, engineers need to discuss directly on the problems occuring in the project process, while the current collaborative platform systems can not support the real-time commuications needed by such processes. Since video conference systems support multi-party to share real-time video and audio information, taking full use of video conference systems can reduce time and travel cost in construction projects. At present, video conference systems are rarely used for the collabortion in construction projects because they are for general-purpose, thus can hardly satisfy the special requirements of construction projects such as for discussing based on engineering drawings.This study focuses on the development of a dedicated video conference system for the daily discussions among engineers in construction projects. Based on literature survey and field investigations, the requirements on the system are identified and summarized. Then the system is designed and a prototype of the system is developed using the latest technology. It is a desktop video conference system with B/S structure, and the real-time discussion functions provided by the system can be integrated to current collaborative platform systems without changing the structure of these systems.The dedicated video conference system developed in this study has various functions such as video and audio communication, sharing screen image, reviewing engineering documents synchronically based on the shared window .etc. Engineers can access the system using their personal computers at any time to dicuss on various kinds of engineering documents. The domain experts highly evaluated the prototype system, and considered that the system could be used to improve significantly the quality and efficiency of the collaboration among engineers in construction projects. |
